Wharton State Forest is locate in southern New Jersey and is the single largest tract of land in the state park system. It encompasses 115,000 acres of the New Jersey Pinelands in Burlington, Camden, and Atlantic counties. The entire park is located within the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve.

Located within the park is historic Batsto Village, a former iron and glass manufacturing site from that operated from 1766 to 1867. The village consists of 33 historic buildings and structures including the Batsto Mansion, post office, gristmill, sawmill, general store and workers' homes. The park offers a downloadable teaching resource and a cell phone tour.

There are extensive hiking trails and unpaved roads throughout the park. This includes a portion of the Batona Trail, which connects the park to nearby Brendan T. Byrne State Forest and Bass River State Forest. There are several camping areas that provide campsites and cabins for overnight stays. Pets are allowed in designated pet-friendly campsites.

Paddling in canoe or kayak are popular activities the Batsto River, Mullica River and the various streams that snake through the forest. Atsion Recreation area offers swimming in Atsion Lake.
