Effigy Mounds National Monument

Effigy Mounds National Monument is located in northeastern Iowa and preserves three prehistoric sites. The site protects burial mounds that were created in the shapes of animals, birds and reptiles.

There are 14 miles of hiking trails over steep terrain. Birding is a popular activity and each year the monument hosts an Annual Hawk Watch Weekend.

The National Park Service provides a series of kid resources, including a Junior Ranger Program. They also provide teachers with an educator guide and lesson plans.
