Ocala National Forest is located in central Florida north of Orlando. It is the southernmost national forest in the continental United States and the second largest in Florida. It was established in 1908 and is the oldest national forest east of the Mississippi River. Ocala protects the largest contiguous sand pine forest in the world and has over 600 lakes, rivers and springs.

Sourland Mountain Preserve is located in Hillsborough, New Jersey and is part of the Somerset County Park System. The preserve contains the northeast portion of the Sourland Region and features many outcrops.

The preserve offers family several opportunities within a quiet setting, including hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. The white-blazed Ridge Trail is 5 miles long and ranges in difficulty from easy to moderate. An extension to the trail extends to Roaring Brook and a large boulder field.

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is located in northwestern Michigan in Ontonagon and Gogebic counties, near the shore of Lake Superior. Mount Mitchell State Park is a state park located in the Black Mountains of North Carolina. The park's namesake Mount Mitchell is more than a mile high with a peak elevation of 6,684 ft and is the highest point east of the Mississippi River. There are also several other peaks within the park with elevations greater than 6000 feat above sea level, including Balsam Cone, Big Tom, Mount Craig - the second highest peak east of the Mississippi River- and Mount Hallback.

A portion of the famous Appalachian Trail runs through the Stokes State Forest along the ridge of Sunrise Mountain.
