Fort Harrison State Park is located in Lawrence, Indiana and is 9 miles from downtown Indianapolis. It is located at the former site of Fort Benjamin Harrison, which was opened in 1906. As a result of the end of the Cold War, the fort was decommissioned in 1991 and in 1995 over half of the land was given to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources for use as a park.

Little Buffalo State Park is located in Centre and Juniata Townships, Pennsylvania. It is named after the Little Buffalo Creek, which is a popular family destination offering fishing and other activities.

Holman Lake is another popular attraction that offers fishing for bass, catfish and panfish. There are two boat launches providing boating access to the lake. Canoes and kayaks are available for rental and boats with electric motors are permitted in the lake.

Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is located in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The 3100-acre Lake Drummond is located within the swamp and is Virginia's largest natural lake. Boating and fishing are popular activities and there is a boat launch in the Feeder Ditch providing access to the lake.

Sherwood Island State Park is located in Westport, CT on the shores of Long Island Sound. It was formed in 1914 and is Connecticut's first state park. Today, it is a popular destination for families. The park includes varied habitats, including a mile-long stretch of beach and surrounding wetlands and woodlands.

McCroskey State Park is located in Northern Idaho and is the state's second-largest park. The park is located at Mineral Mountain and marks a transition between the prairies to the West and the Rocky Mountains to the east.

The main feature of the park is the Skyline Drive, an 18-mile unimproved road that winds along the steep ridge of the mountain. The road is quite rugged and may not be suitable for RVs and family automobiles.

Brandywine Creek State Park is located near Wilmington, DE. The land was formerly a dairy farm and stone walls remain standing throughout the park.

There are two nature preserves within the park. The Tulip Tree Woods preserve protects a stand of 190-year-old tulip poplar trees. The Freshwater Marsh preserve protects the area marshland.

Niobrara National Scenic River is located in North Central Nebraska. 76 miles of the river has been preserved by the National Park Service and over 200 waterfalls cascade over sandstone cliffs.

The Niobrara is well known for it's canoeing and kayaking. Private outfitters offer boat rentals. The NPS offers programs for families and kids, including the Camping Adventure with My Parents (CAMP) overnight program to introduce families to camping.
