Superior National Forest is located in Minnesota near Lake Superior and is known for its boreal forest ecosystem. The forest is made up of varied terrain and includes the Sawtooth Mountains and Misquah Hills. The highest point of the state, Eagle Mountain, is located within the forest.

Siuslaw National Forest is located in western Oregon and includes a variety ecosystems, such as sandy beaches and coastline forests. The forest contains Marys Peak, which is the 4097 feet high above sea level and is the highest peak in the Oregon Coast Range.

There are multiple areas within the forest, including Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, Sand Lake Recreation Area, Rock Creek Wilderness Area and Marys Peak Scenic Botanical Area.

Families who love the outdoors should check out the 2nd Annual New Jersey WILD Outdoor Expo on September 17 and 18, 2011 at the Colliers Mills Wildlife Management Area in Ocean County, New Jersey. Meaher State Park is located in the wetlands of Mobile Bay in southern Alabama. The Mobile Delta consists of over 20,000 acres of water and is formed by the Alabama and Tombigbee Rivers.

A fishing pier and boat launch in the Blakely River provide families with access to great angling. Two nature trails provide hiking, birding and wildlife viewing. A variety of birds can be viewed from the nature trails, including wading birds, terns, osprey and ducks.

Adirondack Park is located in Northeast New York. The park protects the lands surrounding the Adirondack Mountain range and includes several major lakes, such as Lake George and Lake Placid. The mountain range contains 46 peaks above 4000 feet and the highest peak, Mount Marcy, has an elevation of 5344 feet.

White River National Forest is located in northwest Colorado and provides great opportunities for family outdoor recreation. Cedar Bluff State Park is located in Trego County, Kansas at the Cedar Bluff Reservoir. The reservoir is named for the 150-foot high cedar-covered limestone bluffs.

The reservoir is the prominent feature and provides families with a range of water recreation. Boat ramps provide access to the reservoir. There is excellent fishing in the reservoir from boats, the shoreline and fishing piers.

Voyageurs National Park is located in Northern Minnesota near International Falls. The are four lakes within the park, Lake Kabetogama, Lake Namakan, Rainy Lake, and Sand Point Lake. All of the lakes straddle the United States- Canadian border, with the exception of Lake Kabetogama.
